The New York City Law Department is accepting applications for the position of Deputy Division Chief of the Workers Compensation Division. Attorneys in the Division represent the City of New York and other related entities before the New York State Workers Compensation Board. The Deputy Chief will assist the Chief in overseeing attorneys handling matters involving City employees whose claims for benefits are pending before the Workers Compensation Board. Attorneys in the Division appear at hearings and trials before administrative law judges on a daily basis. They conduct investigations, research legal issues, evaluate the merits of claims, and handle direct and cross-examination of both fact and medical witnesses. They research and write administrative appeals and rebuttals to the Commissioners of the Workers’ Compensation Board, handle appeals before the Appellate Division, workers’ compensation related matters in arbitration and state court. Issues litigated by the Division involve coverage under the Workers Compensation Law, timely claim filing, medical disability, need for treatment, and entitlement to wage replacement. The Deputy Chief will also assist the Chief in developing internal controls, ensuring statutory and regulatory compliance, and other oversight, as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants should have extensive experience in Workers Compensation litigation, preferably for a governmental entity, and should be able to demonstrate a history of successful supervision and management of attorneys and legal support professionals. Applicants must be admitted to the New York State bar.
