Under supervision of the Director, Sustainability Policy and Legal Affairs, with wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment and decision, the Deputy Director, Sustainability Enforcement, will perform managerial work pertaining to enforcement of building sustainability laws, including:
- Advise the Bureau of Sustainability on all legal matters related to sustainable building enforcement issues.
- Advise the Bureau to ensure processes are compliant with City rules and regulations.
- Coordinate legal review of all Bureau enforcement correspondence, policy proposals, and publications.
- Develop recommendations for sustainability buildings enforcement policy.
- Supervise a team of attorneys and paralegals working on issues arising from enforcement of building sustainability laws.
- Oversee the preparation of reports and related analyses on cases and/or enforcement processes.
- Ensure efficient and effective collection of penalties and fines assessed.
- Manage special projects and assignments.
- Any other duties as assigned.

Additional Information
Only candidates with at least 8 years of enforcement or direct legal representation experience will be considered.


Minimum Qualifications

Admission to the New York State Bar; and four years of recent full-time responsible, relevant, satisfactory legal experience subsequent to admission to any bar, eighteen months of which must have been in the supervision of other attorneys, in an administrative, managerial or executive capacity, or performing highly complex and significant legal work.

Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.


Preferred Skills

- Experience with adjudication, prosecution, or defense, of Department of Buildings violations, and at the Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings (OATH). - Excellent writing, legal research, and critical thinking and analytical skills. - Experience working with various stakeholders to achieve consensus. - Experience supervising and training enforcement staff. - Demonstrate initiative, resourcefulness, ability to work independently and as part of a team on multiple assignments with minimal supervision. - Experience with Building Code, building sustainability a plus. - Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, West Law, etc.
