The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the city towards the smallest jail system possible without compromising public safety. The DOC is solely responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for staff, providers, visitors, volunteers, and people in custody inside our jails. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to providing people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 9,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.
DOC has a unique opportunity for a Deputy Director of the Law Library Unit within the Division of Programs and Community Partnerships. The Deputy Director of Law Library will support the Director of Law Library in providing long-term vision and day-to-day oversight of Law Library operations. Under the guidance of the Director of Law Library, the Deputy Director’s responsibilities include, but not limited to:
- Providing staff support and departmental guidance on the provision of effective Law Library services
to ensure compliance with the Minimum Standards.
- Conducting daily site visits to all facilities to support staff, trouble-shoot operational issues, and
ensure that services are delivered appropriately.
- Supervising Legal Coordinators who are responsible for providing legal assistance to inmates
in correctional institution Law Libraries and/or housing units.
- Collecting, analyzing and reporting on data pertaining to Law Library operations.
- Reviewing law journals and other publications for information on current legal developments.
- Effectively communicating, troubleshooting, and strategically identifying creative solutions
to programming challenges.
- Assist the Director in ensuring that the Law Library Unit’s goals and objectives are achieved.
- Working closely and collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team and liaise between
departments, having regular contact with uniformed staff, programs staff, and other relevant staff
members.
- Plan training and staff development opportunities for Legal Coordinators.
- Performing the function of a notary public.
- Providing support for special projects and initiatives when necessary.
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in public or business administration, sociology, criminology, mathematics, statistics, or related fields; or
2. An associate degree from an accredited college in public or business administration, sociology, criminology, mathematics, statistics, or a closely related field and two years of full-time satisfactory experience in public or business administration, community relations, social work, mathematical or statistical research; or
3. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization, and four years of Full-time satisfactory experience as described in “2” above; or
4. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1”, “2”, or “3” above. College education may be substituted for up to two years of experience on the basis of 30 semester credits for one year of experience. However, all candidates must have a four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent.
For Assignment Level II and III, in addition to meeting the qualification requirements above, one additional year of the experience described in “2” above is required for Assignment Level II and two additional years of experience for Assignment Level III
For Assignment Level II and III, in addition to meeting the qualification requirements above, one additional year of the experience described in “2” above is required for Assignment Level II and two additional years of experience for Assignment Level III.
1. Experience in handling multiple assignments with competing deadlines with a high degree of detail and accuracy. 2. Two years of experience supervising and coaching staff. 3. One year of full-time satisfactory experience acquired in the United States, in the performance of paralegal (legal assistant) services. 4. Paralegal Certification obtained in the United States from an accredited program, or a program approved by the American Bar Association.
