Hours: Full-Time – 35 Hours

Only candidates who are permanent in the Administrative Graphic Artist title, DDC employees who are permanent in the Graphic Artist title who have filed for the Promotional Exam #5503, or those who filed for the Open Competitive Exam #5003 may apply. The NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) is seeking a Deputy Director for the agency’s Creative Services unit. The Deputy Director will design communications for a variety of media and assist the Director to oversee direction of design, print, video, and other written and digital communications for the agency.

The selected candidate will assist with managing a team of 10 to deliver design and production in line with the City/agency branding; oversee design and production of agency publications, including books, brochures and pamphlets; manage design concepts for agency events and displays; collaborate on brainstorming creative concepts; drive development of chosen concepts successfully to implementation; work closely with the Director and the Commissioner’s Office and agency units to ensure proper coordination and execution..

ADMINISTRATIVE GRAPHIC ARTIST - 1000D


Minimum Qualifications

1. High school graduation or equivalent and two years of training in an approved technical school in oils, water colors, painting, design, black and white, layout and other art media and seven years full-time paid experience as a commercial artist, four years of which must have been in supervision and planning of art work done by a staff; or

2. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1". However, all candidates must have the four years of supervisory experience as described above


Preferred Skills

Bachelor's degree in graphic design or related preferred. Experience managing a team to produce complex, multi-platform design projects required. Detail oriented and organized self-starter who is able to multitask and drive projects on both creative and tactical levels required. Highly creative, with a portfolio demonstrating refined aesthetic sense, highly creative conceptual abilities, and technical skill in execution. Able to demonstrate project management skills, including scoping, scheduling, client management, and production management. Experienced with design strategy and crafting client presentations. Good with communication and interpersonal skills to be able to work and negotiate edits and with designers on team and clients at all levels. Expertise with Adobe CS5 master collection and superior typographic skills required.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
