The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is the largest Fire Department in the United States and universally is recognized as the world's busiest and most highly skilled emergency response agency. The Department's main goal is to provide fire protection, emergency medical care, and other critical public safety services to residents and visitors in the five boroughs. FDNY not only responds to more than a million emergencies every year, its personnel also strive to prevent them by continually educating the public in fire, life safety and disaster preparedness, along with enforcing public safety codes. Since its inception in 1865, FDNY has helped lead efforts to make New York the safest big city in the nation.

The Bureau of Fire Prevention cultivates a safer city for its citizens, visitors and first responders by preventing loss from fire and other emergencies. We accomplish this by identifying fire and life safety hazards; creating and enforcing fire safety laws; reviewing plans for systems designed to protect and alert building occupants; licensing qualified companies to install and service fire protection equipment and systems; certifying individuals to monitor fire safety conditions; educating individuals and businesses about fire safety; providing assistance and guidance to the Bureau of Fire Operations and Bureau of Fire Investigations during post - fire incidents and investigations; and coordinating with other City agencies on matters concerning fire and life safety.

The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) seeks a full-time Administrative Engineer, M-II in the Bureau of Fire Prevention/Technology Management. Reporting directly to the Director, Engineering and Technology Management, the successful candidate will: Supervise and coordinate the variance examination process; serve as a liaison between Technology Management Unit and all BFP inspection units and Operations; variance review process requires intensive studies and research of Fire Codes, Administrative Codes, NFPA standard, industry standards and documents; review complicated technical proposals and engineering plans related to storage and handling of hazardous materials, process plants, waste water treatment facilities, LNG/ CNG facilities, bulk fuel storage, motor fuel dispensing, aircraft fueling facilities, chemical and chemical waste storage, medical gas storage and distribution, flammable solid systems and facilities, flaring systems for refrigeration, hazardous materials systems and facilities, industrial furnaces, fire suppression systems, and any other technical issues as specified in FC 105.4; conduct extensive research and perform necessary calculations to ensure that all technical and safety concerns are addressed prior to submissions approval. Research codes and standards including NYC Fire Code, NYC Construction Codes, Zoning Resolutions, NYC Electrical Code, RCNY, NFPA, UL, ANSI, API, ASME, ASTM, CGA, DOT, FM, and OSHA; prepare written reports and comments in response to inquiries regarding code interpretations, equipment installations, and new products; participate in meetings with technical personnel representing utility companies, consulting engineers and architects, other city agencies; evaluate their proposals and make recommendations; supervise examiners conducting technical studies and research and assist Bureau Management with resolution of complicated technical questions.


Minimum Qualifications

1. A valid New York State License as a Professional Engineer and six (6) years of full-time satisfactory experience in chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, or plan examining work, at least two (2) years of which must have been in an executive, managerial, or administrative capacity.


Preferred Skills

-A master’s degree in chemical engineering/fire protection engineering from an accredited college. -Strong working knowledge of NYC Building and Fire Code, RCNY and NFPA standards. -Excellent writing and communication skills.
