The Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) protects and promotes the safety and well-being of New York City’s children and families by providing child welfare, juvenile justice, and early care services. In juvenile justice, ACS manages and funds services including detention and placement, intensive community-based alternatives for youth, and support services for families.
The Division of Youth and Family Justice (DYFJ) is responsible for the oversight and management of a full continuum of juvenile justice services and programs in New York City. Reporting directly to the Executive Director of Organizational Management within the Office of the Chief Operating Officer, the Deputy Director of Detention Well-Being will be responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive staff wellness program across the DYFJ’s two secure detention facilities, which employ approximately 600 staff, including those from partner divisions and organizations. This position plays a vital role in promoting a positive workplace culture that values employee well-being and creates an environment that fosters good physical, mental, and emotional health.
Specific duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Develop and lead a comprehensive wellness program.
- Coordinate, plan, and facilitate health, fitness, and wellbeing activities and programs for employees.
- Plan and implement classes, speakers, seminars, etc. that promote healthy lifestyles, self-care, positive culture development, and general well-being.
- Develop strategy and materials to publicize wellness programs and engage staff.
- Work collaboratively with detention leadership, central administration, and all programmatic areas within each building to evaluate and respond to areas of need and interest.
- Build relationships and collaborate with other organizations or entities that offer relevant services or resources to support employee wellbeing.
- Maintain data and communication necessary to ensure proper detailed program evaluation.
- Keep up to date with the latest trends and research in the field of wellness and health to identify new ideas and best practices to introduce to the organization.
- Knowledgeable and committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, equitable and inclusive values and practices in wellness initiatives.
- Provides educational presentations and training programs.

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and four years of progressively responsible experience, including one year at the administrative or managerial level in a large governmental agency, business firm, civic or community organization operating in the area of social services; or
2. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" above. However, all candidates must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and the one year of experience at the administrative or management level as described in "1" above.
The preferred candidate should possess the following: - Experience in wellness program development and leadership. - Familiarity with NYC’s youth justice systems is strongly preferred. - Experience as a practitioner of restorative justice and ability to facilitate restorative practices in order to advance staff culture and wellness preferred. - Strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse, multidisciplinary teams are necessary. - Must be organized and efficient, with the ability to work and produce in a fast-paced environment. - Expertise with office including excel. - Candidate must be willing to travel to ACS-operated detention facilities within the five boroughs regularly.
