NYC Department of Finance (DOF) is responsible for administering the tax revenue laws of the city fairly, efficiently, and transparently to instill public confidence and encourage compliance while providing exceptional customer service.

The Property Exemptions Administration (PEA) oversees and executes property tax benefits for a diverse array of entities and individuals. PEA’s core responsibilities encompass the examination, processing, and management of applications for exemptions and abatements. These benefits extend to commercial and industrial properties, residential multi-family construction, new one- to two-family construction, government entities, and non-profits, as well as renters and homeowners, including members of the clergy, seniors, people with disabilities, and veterans. PEA is committed to ensuring the accessibility of property tax benefits for all eligible constituents.

The Unit is seeking a Summer Graduate Intern with strong data analysis skills to provide assistance with three ongoing projects (1) expansion of exemption and abatement programs annual dashboard in Cognos; (2) expansion of exemption and abatement data dictionaries; and (3) creation of exemption and abatement archived reporting dashboard in Power BI.

The selected candidate will provide assistance in working with extremely large administrative data files to create analytic databases. The candidate will also work on summarizing the program and data specifications and provide extensive documentation. The candidate is expected to assist in revising and creating dashboard and data visualization in Cognos and Power BI. The candidate is expected to participate in various stages of the project, from data mining and testing to providing statistical analysis to producing summaries and detailed documentation.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Provide assistance in working with extremely large administrative data files
- Summarize program and data specifications
- Assist in revising and creating dashboard and data visualization in Cognos and Power BI.
- Participate in various stages of assigned projects

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in an accredited college, university or law school.


Preferred Skills

- Proficiency using SAS or another programming language (e.g. Stata, R, SPSS). - Exceptional analytical and quantitative skills. - Experience using relational databases, data mining and extracting data using SQL is desirable. - Experience using ArcGIS or other geographic information systems software is a plus. - Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint - Willingness to learn new software on their own - Ability to follow instructions and interact with people at all levels. Must be able to work well in a team environment as well as work individually with minimal supervision. - Outstanding written and spoken communication skills.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
