With an overarching mission to eliminate ageism and ensure the dignity and quality of life of approximately 1.775 million older New Yorkers, the NYC Department for the Aging is deeply committed to helping older adults age in their homes and creating a community-care approach that reflects a model age-inclusive city.

The program will provide direct services to victims and their families citywide. These services include, but are not limited to: crisis intervention, providing short and long-term counseling to victims of elder abuse and/or crime victims including accessing victims for depression/anxiety and refer to the PROTECT program for mental health services, provide information and referral, conducting risk assessment screenings and developing safety plans, follow up services, advocacy, counseling services to victims individually and to their family, assistance with home security devise installation, and referrals for emergency financial assistance. The program assists victims with completing the NYS Office of Victim service claim form. The program also provides case consultation support to community professional/agencies.

NYC Aging Office of Elder Justice seeks a highly motivated, organized, and detail-oriented individual to provide comprehensive crime and elder abuse assistance for victims and/or survivors aged 60 and over. The Intake Advocate will provide direct services to victims and their families citywide. These services include, but are not limited to: crisis intervention, providing short and long-term counseling to victims of elder abuse and/or crime victims including accessing victims for depression and anxiety.

Under supervision, with latitude for independent work with wide latitude for independent action, the Intake Advocate will serve a key role within the unit providing direct services to victims of elder abuse and crime and working in collaboration with social workers/case workers on the team, contracted service providers and other law enforcement, legal services and victim service organizations to provide optimal care and support. The Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

- Process Intakes and ensure completion in accordance with the schedule set by the supervisor and/or on an “as needed” basis.
- Conduct screenings, needs, and risk assessments during the intake process utilizing the elder abuse database system and promptly escalate all emergency situations to ECVRC Director.
- Contact clients, provide referrals and collateral sources, and referrals to other agencies and internal as needed.
- Resources, including knowledge of public agencies, benefits, and entitlements are developed and maintain reports for tracking clients needs.
- Facilitate and improve delivery of direct service to clients.
- Respond to all client request or in person inquiries and screens all phone calls or visitors for appropriate action. Refer clients and other professional staff to ECVRC resources.
- Responds to e-mails, in a timely and accurate manner.
- Supervise case aids, volunteers and or College Aides.
- Maintains funds for petty cash and keep track of accounting records and reports. Disburse payments to appropriate units. Reporting of financial assistance to bureau.
- Handle 365/CTL service requests daily and input client data information into the unit’s “STARS” data system.
- Access and utilize NYPD generated crime victim list weekly and enter information into “STARS” data system. Ongoing collaboration with NYPD and to address victim referrals.
- Collaborate with NYPD in addressing victim referrals.
- Prepare and maintain a variety of reports, confidential ECVRC documents.


Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.


Preferred Skills

- The Selected candidate must be mission driven and committed to making an impact in improving services for older adults in NYC who are victims of elder abuse/crime. - Extensive knowledge and experience in elder abuse and/or crime victim services strongly preferred. - Knowledge and experience working with older adults including resources and services that support older adults aging in place. - Ability to work in fast paced environment without compromise to quality of services including ability to prioritize and effectively manage time. - Excellent oral and written communications skills and capacity to work both independently and as part of a team. - Excellent organizational skills, ability to take initiative, problem solve, prioritize duties and work independently in a fast paced and team environment. - Master's degree in Social Work or closely related degree preferred but not required. - SIFI certification and ability to supervise and manage MSW interns a plus. - Bilingual (Spanish/Russian/Cantonese/Mandarin) a plus. - Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) a plus.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
