Major Responsibilities

- Under supervision, test, maintain, repair and replace various types of thermostats and related equipment used for the control of heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems.
- Install tubing, pipe and fittings.
- Check existing control installations to determine the nature and cause of trouble and make necessary repairs and/or adjustments.
- Use pneumatic, mechanical, electronic, and/or electrical devices to check control installations.
- Set and calibrate thermostats on walls and fixtures.
- Requisition parts as required; maintain supply inventory.
- Supervise assigned personnel as required.
- Keep work records and perform related work.
- Experience working on or near controls for high pressure steam, air lines and high voltage.
- Experience working on or near ducts, pipes or steam lines that could be insulated with hazardous materials.
- Ability to work in confined spaces such as: plenum, chase or hung ceiling.
- Ability to climb and work on ladders and scaffolding 16 feet or more in height.
- Ability to walk or stand 4-6 hours a day.
- Ability to lift weights up to sixty pounds to a height of three to four feet.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualification Requirements

1. Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as a thermostat repairer acquired within the last ten years; or

2. At least three years of experience as described in "1" above and either sufficient experience in the thermostat repairing field as a helper or apprentice, or sufficient training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade, technical or vocational high school to make up the equivalent of the remaining required experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of the above helper or apprenticeship experience or training.


Preferred Skills

Preference will be given to applicants who are permanent Thermostat Repairers or applicants who take the Thermostat Repairer Civil Service Examination (Exam No. 6110). The tentative filing period will begin May 7, 2026 and end on May 27, 2026. For details, visit www.nyc.gov/dcas and click on "Exam Schedules”. 1. Proficiency in Niagara (N4) Framework, JCI Metasys, Trane Tracer, and ALC WebCTRL building management systems. 2. Excellent administrative, organizational and communication skills. 3. Experience with direct digital controls, building management systems, programmable logic controllers, system integration, and process instrumentation. 4. Completion of energy related coursework such as BOC-1, BOC-2, and/or CEM. 5. Valid New York State driver license.

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required within 90 days of hire for all other candidates.
