NYC Parks is a design award-winning city agency that builds and cares for public spaces for New Yorkers to connect, play and enjoy. NYC Parks manages more than 30,000 acres or 14% of the city’s land, encompassing more than 5,000 individual properties. Our diverse set of assets includes recreational facilities, nature centers, historic buildings and structures, golf courses, athletic fields, playgrounds, tennis courts, public pools, public restrooms, retaining walls and nearly 14 miles of beaches.

The mission of the Natural Resources Group (NRG) within the Division of Environment and Planning is to protect, restore, expand, and manage New York City’s natural spaces and green infrastructure to maximize their ecological and social benefits for all New Yorkers. The Division is responsible for planning, citywide urban forestry, and ecological and horticulture initiatives. The Stewardship Team, within NRG, supports the Division and engages the public by providing diverse opportunities for direct care of natural resources and the urban forest across the City.

Major Responsibilities
- Under the direction of the Deputy Director of Stewardship and Senior Scientist coordinate and support natural areas outreach and education in Southeast Queens with community partners and youth.
- Support natural areas engagement and education events in Southeast Queens with a focus on forests, grasslands, and wetlands at Idlewild Park, through year-round paid internships, professional development opportunities, and skills training.
- Conduct ongoing outreach to community partners/collaborators for service events, education initiatives, panel discussions in Southeast Queens, in relation to natural areas.
- Supervise staff, interns, and volunteers, instructing them in safe and effective natural areas management techniques and the proper use and care of equipment and materials.
- Track and support volunteer and intern recruitment and engagement progress towards stewardship program goals. Manage a database of these efforts and prepare presentations and reports as needed.
- Support recognition and feedback opportunities for interns and volunteers and facilitate access to technical resources.
- Schedule and promote volunteer events. Participate in event management, including registration and leading volunteers or community partners as assigned.
- Help coordinate civic or community science programming related to natural areas (e.g., City Nature Challenge).
- Support volunteers, interns and staff in field work and management activities in NYC forests, grasslands and wetlands.
- Support the execution and development of program proposals with non-profit and community partners. Help prepare grant applications to fund staff and program initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.


Preferred Skills

1. Deep familiarity and experience working with New York City environmental /green community-based organizations, as well as understanding of NYC natural area restoration needs and objectives. 2. Ten years of experience in volunteer management, community engagement and restoration or management of urban natural habitats, preferably in New York City. At least five years’ experience successfully collaborating with peer partners and managing a team. 3. Strong writing, public speaking/presentation, and problem-solving skills. 4. Experience in Excel, volunteer tracking systems, GIS, management, deep relationship/network building. 5. Valid New York State driver license.

Residency Requirement

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required within 90 days of hire for all other candidates.
