Job Description

The New York City Housing Authority is seeking a Housing Specialist for the Leased Housing Department’s Housing Navigation Unit (HNU). HNU is responsible for assisting new Section 8 voucher holders in identifying, viewing, and renting apartments. Reporting to the Housing Specialist Supervisor, the Housing Specialist will be responsible for working closely with voucher holders to assist them with finding a suitable unit to rent. The Housing Specialist will also conduct outreach to property owners and brokers to identify housing opportunities. Responsibilities also include, but are not limited to, the following:

Coordinate with supportive housing community organizations in matching eligible voucher holders to their units.
Identify housing opportunities for voucher holders searching by conducting outreach and coordinating with case managers, property owners, property management companies, and brokers.
Provide and improve community service by performing liaison functions between City agencies, community organizations and groups, property owners, and voucher holders.
May train other personnel or act as a team leader.
Serve as the primary point of contact for property owners, case managers, and voucher holders during the lease-up process.
Elicit support and participation in housing navigation programming.
Perform difficult and responsible clerical operations.
Assist voucher holders with completing rental applications, interpreting leases, and understanding tenant right and responsibilities.
Maintain data related to property owners and brokers, available units, and client interactions.
Prepare case-related reports including outcomes (e.g., successes, and challenges).
Complete intake interviews and conduct screenings/qualification assessments related to housing searches.
Refer voucher holders to appropriate agencies, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualification Requirements
1. High school graduation or equivalent and three years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to duties described above; or
2. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" above.


Preferred Skills

Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to network, develop, and maintain relationships. Strong organizational, planning, and analytical skills. Experience with word processing, scheduling applications, spreadsheets, and presentation software like PowerPoint. Ability to effectively manage time and prioritize workload.
