Job Description

The NYC Department of Probation (DOP) is a world leader in working creatively and effectively engaging with people under court-mandated community supervision. Through innovative partnerships with people and organizations throughout the New York City, DOP provides opportunities for those on probation to access services and opportunities that positively impact their life trajectory. Following the best current data on “what works,” staff at DOP engage in meaningful relationships with those on probation to enhance community safety and decrease recidivism.

The Department of Probation is seeking to hire (6) six Community Assistants to support the day-to-day operations of the Department, enhances communication between DOP, City agencies, and the public, and assists probation clients and their families by providing information, referrals, and administrative support. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Perform routine clerical tasks including creating, sorting, filing, scanning, locating, and routing records, case files, and related materials

- Process incoming cases for various levels of probation using logging and control systems for tracking and statistical purposes

- Prepare case folders (both physical and electronic within the case management system) and assign cases to Probation Officers

- Document court actions and case outcomes accurately in the case management system

- Digitally photograph probation clients and maintain associated records

- Provide front desk coverage on a rotating schedule by greeting probation clients, family members, and the public in a professional and courteous manner

- Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications


1. There are no formal education or experience requirements for this position. However, the ability to understand and carry out simple instructions is required.
2. Candidates must be able to understand and be understood in English.

Residency Requirement


New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
