The Communications Director will be responsible for developing strategies for, and providing, effective communication about the Law Department’s work to the public, the news media, and Law Department employees. Responsibilities include:

- In consultation with the Corporation Counsel and Executives, develop a messaging agenda and proactive communication strategy for the Law Department.
- Ensure all communications from the Law Department, including reports, press releases, statements, quotes, law journal articles, and speech drafts are in line with the Corporation Counsel’s vision, responsibilities, and standards, and in line with the Law Department’s core values.
- Identify, organize, and coordinate all press announcements, press releases, events, and Corporation Counsel speaking requests.
- Serve as the official Law Department communications liaison with City Hall, City Council, city agencies, and external entities.
- In consultation with the Corporation Counsel and Executives, ensure appropriate messaging in response to press inquiries.
- Supervise a team of communications staff.
- Perform other duties and functions as required.


Minimum Qualifications

1. A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with 24 credits in English, journalism or public relations, plus five (5) years of full-time paid experience in public relations, journalism or advertising, including two (2) years in an administrative, supervisory or consultative capacity; or
2. A combination of education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" above. Graduate study in English, journalism, or public relations may be substituted for up to one year of required experience. However, all candidates must have at least two (2) years of administrative, supervisory, or consultative experience in public relations, journalism or advertising.
