Located in Tribeca, the New York City Office of the Actuary (NYCOA) provides actuarial services to the City’s five actuarially funded Retirement Systems and other funds and the New York City Health Benefits Program. In addition, the NYCOA provides actuarial information – pension and Other Post-Employment Benefits (OPEB) to employers, City and State legislative bodies, labor organizations, oversight agencies, and active and retired members.
The NYCOA seeks two (2) interns working towards a graduate or undergraduate (Junior or Senior year) degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, or computer science from an accredited college, to work side-by-side with actuaries and lawyers is the Certification Services Division and Actuarial Services Division.
Under direction, the selected candidates will:
- Assist the Certifications Services Division in several aspects of certifying benefits payable from the pension plans, including and not limited to the calculation of retirement benefits payable using actuarial equivalence and annuity factors, database maintenance, updating and refining calculation files.
- Assist the Actuarial Services Division in various aspects of the actuarial valuation project including learning about modelling techniques and actuarial software, preparation of the actuarial valuation report, supporting documents, advisory reports and other correspondence.
- Gain exposure to the legal aspects, requirements, and complexities of the City’s pension plans.

Length of internship: Fall 23/Spring ’24 semester, 15-20 hrs/week (flexible depending on school requirements)
For Assignment Level I:
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school.
For Assignment Level II (Information Technology):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or closely related field, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.
For Assignment Level III (Information Technology Fellow):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or other area relevant to the information technology project(s) assigned, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study. Appointments to this Assignment Level will be made by the Technology Steering Committee through the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications.
SPECIAL NOTE
Maximum tenure for all Assignment Levels in the title of College Aide is 6 years. No student shall be employed more than half-time in any week in which classes in which the student is enrolled are in session. Students may be employed full-time during their vacation periods.
