The Transit Development group at the New York City Department of Transportation is seeking a College Aide or Intern for its Bus Priority and Transit Planning and Policy sub-units. The selected candidate for the Bus Priority unit will assist with the planning, coordination, and implementation of bus priority projects to improve speed, reliability, and comfort for New York City's bus riders. As a part of the Mayoral Administration’s ambitious bus lane goals, Transit Development is implementing several bus priority projects in the summer of 2024. The College Aide or Intern will work closely with Project Management staff to help oversee implementation of projects, by reviewing implementation progress including a combination of office and field work. Additionally, the candidate will help assist in development proposals for 2025 projects through creating existing conditions profiles, analyzing existing bus speed and traffic data, and researching and identifying stakeholders to begin the outreach process.

The selected intern for the Transit Planning and Policy sub-unit would focus on a variety of planning and operational initiatives related to charting the long-range vision for bus priority projects and improving the user experience of riding the bus in New York City. Tasks may include GIS and data analysis in support of corridor prioritization for future bus lanes and busways, analysis related to accessible bus stops and the next generation of Real Time Passenger Information signs at bus stops, among other issues. Candidates will be expected to have a basic understanding of New York City geography and institutions, as well as ability to build and/or maintain large data sets.

Transit Development (TD) develops public transit-supportive street infrastructure and policies in order to improve mobility for all New Yorkers. TD also serves as a resource to the agency on public transit related matters, including acting as one of the key points of contact with the MTA agencies.

The Division of Transportation Planning and Management (TPM) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the City's streets, supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality for people living, working, and doing business in New York City. The Division’s responsibilities include planning, street design, technical analysis, signs, transit development, freight mobility and markings, ensuring the safety of motor vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists.
