JOB DESCRIPTION:
The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.
In an effort to preserve and commemorate the department's 180 years of history, the Strategic Initiatives Bureau (SIB) is launching Forever the Finest a campaign providing greater visibility and celebration of the achievements and impact of the New York City Police Department. Part of the initiative's mission is to collect, document and properly preserve the digital and physical archival material collected by the NYPD over the course of its existence. The Forever the Finest Initiative team aims to create a comprehensive archive, to be used as an institutional memory for future leadership. The Strategic Initiatives Bureau reports to the Police Commissioner's Office and is located in One Police Plaza, New York City.
Forever the Finest Research Interns will work closely with members of service (MOS) within SIB to locate, document and catalog historical data. Interns will also be instrumental in identifying and codifying archival best practices, as well as keeping abreast of developments in industry standard methodologies. Specific Tasks may involve:
-Work directly with MOS to identify, adapt and implement the adoption of archival preservation standards for the NYPD's use
-Perform historical research using internal and external data sources and skillfully summarize research findings.
-Generate various documents including PowerPoint presentations, databases and status reports.
-Understand how and when to communicate difficult/sensitive information appropriately.

For Assignment Level I:
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school.
For Assignment Level II (Information Technology):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or closely related field, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.
For Assignment Level III (Information Technology Fellow):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or other area relevant to the information technology project(s) assigned, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study. Appointments to this Assignment Level will be made by the Technology Steering Committee through the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications.
SPECIAL NOTE
Maximum tenure for all Assignment Levels in the title of College Aide is 6 years. No student shall be employed more than half-time in any week in which classes in which the student is enrolled are in session. Students may be employed full-time during their vacation periods.
-Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Teams, PowerPoint, and Visio -Knowledge of archival and historical documentation best practices and software use -Experienced in conducting extensive archival research, collecting, and presenting data. -Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. -Great attention to detail and experience managing multiple tasks and assignments.
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
