Job Description
The New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) invests in a network of community-based organizations and programs to alleviate the effects of poverty and to provide opportunities for New Yorkers and communities to flourish.
DYCD is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented College Aide to support its Communications Unit. This position offers a valuable opportunity for a current college student to gain hands-on experience in public sector communications, digital content development, and interdepartmental collaboration within New York City government.
- Assist with the creation, editing, and organization of content for digital platforms, including social media, websites, presentations, and internal communications.
- Research and monitor social media trends, platform updates, and best practices to help increase follower growth and audience engagement
- Attend agency events, programs, and community engagements to capture photos and video content.
- Support the planning, coordination, and execution of agency-wide communications initiatives and campaigns.
- Maintain and organize the communications unit’s photo and video library, ensuring files are accurately labeled, stored, and accessible.
- Update and manage the agency’s SharePoint calendar to track internal agency-wide events, and deadlines

For Assignment Level I:
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school.
For Assignment Level II (Information Technology):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or closely related field, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.
For Assignment Level III (Information Technology Fellow):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or other area relevant to the information technology project(s) assigned, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study. Appointments to this Assignment Level will be made by the Technology Steering Committee through the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications.
SPECIAL NOTE
Maximum tenure for all Assignment Levels in the title of College Aide is 6 years. No student shall be employed more than half-time in any week in which classes in which the student is enrolled are in session. Students may be employed full-time during their vacation periods.
- Basic knowledge of using a digital camera, including capturing photos and video in event or on-site settings. - Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (such as Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Illustrator, or similar tools) for basic photo and video editing. - Working knowledge of Microsoft Office / Microsoft 365 tools, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. - Basic understanding of social media platforms and an interest in creating content that supports organizational goals. - Interest in public service and an ability to connect social media and digital storytelling to DYCD’s mission of supporting youth, families, and communities. - Strong attention to detail and ability to follow branding, accessibility, and content guidelines. - Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively as part of a team.

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
