We seek an experienced tree care professional to oversee the Climber & Pruner Training Program, including program design and direct supervision of trainers as they carry out classroom and hands-on instruction in arboriculture, tree work safety, tree climbing and rigging, vehicles, and equipment, as well as evaluate trainees, proctor exams and more.

Major Responsibilities
- Under direction of the Deputy Chief of Workforce Development, with latitude for independent judgement and initiative, oversee the coordination, planning, and delivery of daily training material and work assignments for program trainers and trainees.
- Actively assist, support, and provide backup for trainers in the delivery of training material and work assignments.
- Collaborate with Agency staff and subject matter experts to create daily lesson plans for trainers and trainees – including content, evaluations, locations and instructors.
- Track program progress and provide reports and presentations to Forestry Management and other internal and external stakeholders as needed. Communicate and adapt to unexpected changes to curriculum, participants and/or trainers.
- Ensure all safety protocols are followed by trainers and trainees.
- Ensure the accurate tracking of all work completed by the program in ForMS.
- React appropriately to situations needing quick decisions, document and report all incidents, accidents, emergencies, and disciplinary issues and enforce disciplinary measures as needed.
- Ensure timely communication of important details, needs, conflicts, and issues preventing the completion of daily training and work assignments.
- Evaluate and support trainers in their evaluations of trainees based on standard criteria.
- Carry out various administrative tasks including scheduling daily activities; securing training venues, equipment, and supplies; coordinating with other Parks divisions and outside vendors; preparing purchase requests; timekeeping; and managing transportation and vehicle service issues.
- Oversee/coordinate any storm related tasks assigned to trainees such as auxiliary chainsaw crew assignments.
- Conduct outreach to other city agencies and organizations regarding workforce development and similar training programs.

Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college plus four years of satisfactory, full-time experience in recreation leadership, gardening, grounds maintenance, building maintenance or construction, of which 18 months must have been in an administrative, consultative, managerial or executive capacity; or

2. High school graduation or its educational equivalent plus six years of experience as described in "1" above; or
3. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must possess the 18 months of administrative, consultative, managerial, or executive experience as described in "1" above.

License Requirement
A Motor Vehicle Driver's License valid in the State of New York is required within six months of the date of appointment.


Preferred Skills

1. Permanent Administrative Park & Recreation Managers and Park Supervisors will receive preference. 2. Six months of satisfactory, full-time experience as a Climber and Pruner or Arborist. 3. Ability to perform and demonstrate all Climber & Pruner duties, including proper tree climbing, rigging, and operation of all forestry tools, vehicles, and machinery. 4. Strong organizational and leadership skills, and ability to motivate. 5. Proficiency in ForMS Desktop and ForMS Mobile. 6. Ability to carry out various administrative duties requiring computer skills and knowledge of software such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. 7. Excellent management, administrative, and communication skills. 8. A valid New York State driver license.

Residency Requirement

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required within 90 days of hire for all other candidates.
