NYC Parks is the steward of over 30,000 acres of land 14 percent of New York City including more than 5,000 individual properties ranging from Coney Island Beach and Central Park to community gardens and Greenstreets. We look after 600,000 street trees, and two million more in parks.

The Division of Environment and Planning aims to protect, restore, and expand New York City's green spaces and natural areas to maximize their benefits for environmental and community health and resilience. The Natural Resources Group within Environment and Planning manages over 10,000 acres of natural areas across the five boroughs, including forests, grasslands, and wetlands, and has secured tens of millions of dollars of grant from state, federal and private sources over the past decades to fund restoration and management across these ecosystems.

The newly developed Natural Resources Training Program is a green job training and employment program, providing a pathway into environmentally focused careers for underserved communities. This opportunity is within the Plant Production Track, one of the four tracks offered by the Natural Resources Training Program.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Under supervision, assist in general horticulture work, including landscape maintenance, plant production, and care for facilities of the public municipal nursery that serves NYC Parks.
- Assist with all aspects of greenhouse and outdoor plant production: transplanting of starter materials, preparation of soil mixes and potting operations, weeding, watering, fertilizing; moving of stock; pulling of stock to fill orders.
- Assist in nursery yard maintenance involving identifying and controlling invasive species, removing debris and trash, weed whacking, mowing lawn areas, seeding, maintenance of hoop houses and irrigation systems.
- Assist with preparation, maintenance, harvesting and cleaning of seed increase plots. Assist with wild seed collections.
- Assist in and perform tasks involved in the operation and care of hand and power tools and equipment. Make necessary operating adjustments and report needs for repairs and replacements to supervisor.
- Operate motorized equipment such as mowers, tractors and two-cycle equipment for landscape management.
- Perform safety checks on facilities and equipment; Clean and maintain facilities.
- May move furniture, climb and perform other physical activities as required in the performance of assigned duties.

While there are no formal education or experience requirements, certain programs may require such standards. Good physical condition is required for certain programs.


Preferred Skills

1. Ability to work outdoors in all weather and environmental conditions. 2. Experience in gardening or landscaping work, including familiarity with plants of the northeastern United States. 3. Ability to safely lift 50 lbs. 4. Ability to work effectively as part of a team or independently. 5. Experience working with volunteers. 6. Demonstrated commitment to public service and the environment.

Residency Requirement

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required within 90 days of hire for all other candidates.
