The New York City Law Department is accepting applications from admitted attorneys for the position of Chief of the Executive Litigation & Policy Group, which is part of our Executive Division.

Working closely with senior Law Department leadership, the Executive Litigation and Policy Unit Chief will lead a team of attorneys responsible for both counseling and litigation functions in matters with significant revenue and programmatic implications for the City of New York. This includes the commencement and defense of complex and high-impact litigation within the unit’s purview, spanning areas such as administrative, constitutional, and municipal law. The counseling work focuses on federal grants and emerging regulatory and enforcement areas of law, which may entail coordinating across city, state, and federal government and non-governmental stakeholders, preparing briefing materials and presentations, maintaining reports and information trackers, and drafting guidance documents.

In addition to managing a portfolio of significant matters, the Unit Chief will be responsible for setting strategic priorities for the unit, ensuring consistency and excellence in legal work product, and supervising, mentoring, and evaluating a group of attorneys and legal support professionals.

Candidates must have at least 10 years of legal experience following graduation from an ABA accredited law school and be admitted to the practice of law in New York State. They must be admitted or eligible for immediate admission to the SDNY and EDNY. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional legal writing, analytical, and advocacy skills, along with a demonstrated ability to communicate complex legal positions effectively to various stakeholders in both litigation and advisory contexts. Substantial experience with complex or high-stakes litigation – particularly affirmative litigation – and/or deep familiarity with municipal law is strongly preferred. Applicants should be able to demonstrate a history of successful supervision and management of attorneys and legal support professionals.
