Job Description
The NYC Department of Buildings is responsible for ensuring the safe and lawful use of buildings and properties by enforcing the NYC Construction Codes, Energy Code and Zoning Resolution. This position manages the work of a unit responsible for the inspection of buildings, other structures, and/or devices in the assigned discipline/s for conformity with NYC Construction Codes, Department rules, other pertinent laws and rules, and approved plans and specifications.
Under direction:
- Manage a unit responsible for conducting efficient and effective inspection work to attain target goals. Plan, direct, and coordinate the work of a unit. Assign, supervise, and evaluate the work of subordinates.
- Through the chain of command, inform the appropriate staff of problems or issues that require the intervention of senior staff.
- Meet with inspectors on a regular basis to resolve any concerns they may have about their duties or Department policies or procedures.
- Meet collectively with all unit personnel at least once per month to review unit concerns and operations.
- Deploy personnel to ensure maximum efficiency and optimum service to public.
- Explain and enforce laws and rules relevant to the field.
- Testify as needed, including at ECB, depositions, and court.
- Maintain records and make reports.
- Issue stop work orders as necessary.
- Represent the Department at meetings and conferences with representatives of public agencies and private entities.
- Plan and conduct special surveys and investigations.
- Determine unsafe building conditions and refer unsafe conditions for engineering review.
- May operate a motor vehicle in the performance of assigned duties.
REMOTE WORK

1. Seven years of full-time satisfactory experience working at a construction trade or working as an inspector of construction, hoists and rigging, plumbing, boilers, or elevators; at least 18 months of which must have been in a managerial or administrative capacity; or
2. At least two years of experience, as described in "1" above, at least 18 months of which must have been in a managerial or administrative capacity, and a license as a professional engineer or registered architect issued pursuant to the education law; or
3.Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” above. All candidates must have at least 2 years of experience as described in "1" above, at least 18 months of which must have been in a managerial or administrative capacity. One year of experience will be credited for each year of apprenticeship in the construction trades or building inspection up to a maximum of three years of the general experience. Education towards a degree in architecture, architectural technology, construction management, engineering, engineering technology, or a related field from an accredited college or university will be credited on the basis of 30 credits for one year of experience, up to a maximum of four years of the general experience. One year of experience will be credited for each year of formal training or education in a field of study relevant to the construction trades up to a maximum of two years of the general experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the NYC Construction Codes, Zoning Resolution, and other applicable laws and rules under the jurisdiction of the Department of Buildings - Computer literacy - Excellent written and verbal communication, organizational, managerial, and leadership skills - Detail-oriented
