Job Description
The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the city towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for staff, providers, visitors, volunteers, and people in custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledge experts.
The Chaplain will under direction conduct religious mandated and non-mandated services, provide spiritual and moral guidance, as well as interview and counsel inmates. Other duties will include but are not limited to the following:
- Schedule religious congregate services in full compliance with all applicable laws, rules, directives, policies, protocols, and standards.
- Administer rites and/or sacraments.
- Conduct individual and group counseling.
- Instruct religious education classes and study groups.
- Coordinate congregate and community engagement events in collaboration with internal and external parties.
- Notify next of kin in cases of serious injury, illness, or death of a person in custody.
- Assist the counseling services unit as needed with the coordination of arrangements for persons in custody to attend the wake or funeral of an immediate family member.
- Ensure that data and tracking sheets pertaining to chaplaincy services are entered accurately and submitted in a timely manner.
- Schedule, supervise, and support religious volunteers.
- Perform related duties as required.
Preferred Skills
- Four Units of CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education).
- Experience leading MBSR or similar meditation modalities.
- Familiarity with various religious beliefs is desirable.
