Job Description

THE SELECTED CANDIDATE WILL BE OFFERED A SALARY OF $55,752.00

The Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) protects and promotes the safety and well-being of New York City’s children and families by providing child welfare, juvenile justice, and early care services. In child welfare, ACS contracts with private nonprofit organizations to support and stabilize families at risk of a crisis through preventive services and provides foster care services for children not able to safely remain at home. Each year, the agency’s Division of Child Protection responds to more than 50,000 reports of suspected child abuse or neglect. In juvenile justice, ACS manages and funds services including detention and placement, intensive community-based alternatives for youth, and support services for families. ACS is also a key part of NYCs early childhood and education continuum, providing childcare assistance to thousands of child welfare involved and low-income children so they can access safe, affordable, quality care.

Reporting to the Senior Chaplain under the portfolio of the Office of the First Deputy Commissioner, the Chaplain is responsible for the planning, coordination, implementation, and facilitation of religious services for youth in care while residing in secure detention facilities or the Nicholas Scoppetta Children’s Center (“Children’s Center”). The Chaplain will be working to provide these services and programs to foster hopefulness for residents and staff working in congregate care settings. The secure detention facilities are overseen and managed by ACS Division of Youth and Family Justice (DYFJ), which is responsible for oversight and management of secure and non-secure detention services for juveniles awaiting disposition in family, criminal, and supreme courts.

Specific duties will include but are not limited to:

- Schedule and conduct religious services and provide spiritual and moral guidance for youth in need of supervision in a childcare facility and perform other related work.
- Organize, coordinate and conduct religious educational programs and coordinate the religious programs in collaboration with other DYFJ facility staff and Children’s Center staff.
- Make pastoral calls on the newly admitted, sick or about to be released youths.
- Counsel youth of his/her faith at the facility and their families on personal, moral and spiritual matters.
- Participate in detention, milieu-based meetings, conferences, team meetings and weekly program meetings to support the planning and development of special programs across youth living spaces and other designated programming spaces.
-Track and verify youth attendance and participation in religious services and programs.
- Maintain cooperative relationships with social service agencies and other community organizations.
- Must be willing to travel, attend meetings and events across secure detention facilities and the Children’s center as well as work evenings and weekends.
