The Department of Social Services (DSS) is comprised of the administrative units of the New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA) and the Department of Homeless Services (DHS). HRA is dedicated to fighting poverty and income inequality by providing New Yorkers in need with essential benefits such as Food Assistance and Emergency Rental Assistance. DHS is committed to preventing and addressing homelessness in New York City by employing a variety of innovative strategies to help families and individuals successfully exit shelter and return to self-sufficiency as quickly as possible.
HRA/General Support Services (GSS) provides safe, healthy, and appropriate facilities for HRA’s various social service programs. Its many functions include facilities planning and coordination, design and construction, renovation, repair and maintenance, custodial and other building services, health/safety program coordination, lease and property management, land use and environmental review activities, contract administration for facilities services, and warehouse operations. GSS plays a major role in HRA emergency preparedness.
General Support Services/ Bureau of Construction & Building Maintenance (BCBM) is recruiting for one (1) Cement Mason who, under the direction of the Supervisor Mechanics, will:
- Keep logbook by documenting job by work order; write materials list for job; ensure delivery of materials and equipment.
- Supervise the Mason’s Helper in the performance of installation/repairs.
- Mix cement and concrete and finish the work to grade and contour; repair/install sidewalks, concrete floors, brick work, cinder block work and plastering. Install/repair ceramic tiles for walls and floors.
- Work from blueprints/sketches and perform work is done in accordance to plans and instructions from immediate supervisor and Supervisor of Mechanics. Provide input in field conditions to architects/engineers.
- Perform all work in accordance with the New York City Building Code. Have intimate knowledge of Code. Keep current with other City/State/Federal Building regulations. Share knowledge with colleagues. Ensure that standards Are met.
- Document work by completing computer Work Sheets attesting to skill performed, hours worked, and location of building. Computer Sheets are used as a control on productivity and overtime usage.
- Provide input into performance appraisal of Mason’s Helper.
1. Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as a cement mason; or
2. At least three years of full-time satisfactory experience as a cement mason, plus sufficient full-time satisfactory experience as a mason’s helper, or relevant training acquired in an approved trade school, technical school or vocational high school to make up the equivalent of the remaining experience. The school must be approved by a state’s Department of Education or comparable agency.
You will receive credit for six months of cement mason experience for each year of mason’s helper experience or approved training.
