The Division of Sidewalk & Inspection Management’s Citywide Concrete Unit supports the agency’s goal to enhance, rehabilitate, and maintain the City’s infrastructure by acting as the agency’s primary construction unit. We employ dedicated engineers, managers, support staff, laborers and adopt cost-savings and efficiency, while maintaining the highest standards of excellence and service to safety and quality.
Under direction of the Supervisor Bricklayer, the selected candidates will perform the following duties: check the forms that holds the concrete to ensure that they are constructed correctly; set the forms that hold the concrete to the desired pitch and depth and align them as needed; spread, level, and smooth concrete using rake shovel or power trowel, screed and float; monitor the temperature during the curing of the concrete; finish the concrete (wetting the surface and smoothing the surface); mold expansion joint and edge using edging tools and straightedge; provide direction to the vehicle operator during concrete pours and ensure the chute is in the correct position; direct the casting of concrete and supervise laborer who uses a shovel or rake to spread the concrete and install ADA tiles to the desired pitch and depth. Prepare material requisition and maintain records for each job.
1. Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as a cement mason; or
2. At least three years of full-time satisfactory experience as a cement mason, plus sufficient full-time satisfactory experience as a mason’s helper, or relevant training acquired in an approved trade school, technical school or vocational high school to make up the equivalent of the remaining experience. The school must be approved by a state’s Department of Education or comparable agency.
You will receive credit for six months of cement mason experience for each year of mason’s helper experience or approved training.
Preference will be given to candidates that have prior experience using power tools, walk behind saw, demolition hammer, plate compactor and power drill.
