The Commissioner’s Office provides direction, guidance, and thought partnership to all lines of service. The office provides oversight of agency initiatives, sets the overall direction and mission for the agency, and resolves individual and agency customer service-related requests. Conducts targeted monitoring of agency internal controls to identify and address potential operational weaknesses to improve the quality of performance, efficiency, and the public positioning of DCAS via external communications.

It is comprised of seven units:

- Audit and Compliance Services
- City Record
- Communications
- DCAS Diversity and EEO
- Special Events
- Strategic Operations
- External Affairs

Special Events plans internal agencywide events and coordinates DCAS-owned buildings’ film shoots. It also provides technical and event support for all citywide events for the agencies and for those sponsored by the Mayor, First Lady and City Council.

The Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) seeks to hire a carpenter to work within the ceremonial unit. This unit falls under the executive division’s special events unit. The DCAS ceremonial unit supports all Mayoral, agency, and city sponsored events throughout the five boroughs.

Responsibilities of a carpenter working at DCAS include but may not be limited to:

- Installing, repairing, and replacing flooring, partitions, window frames and sashes, door frames and doors, and other related components of buildings and structures.

- Installing, repairing and replacing boardwalks, fences and screens.

- Building and repairing toolboxes, movable and fixed sashes, doors and wooden office furniture, playground, park, school equipment, and various types of ladders.

- Building and rebuilding truck cabs.

- Is familiar with, uses, and operates both hand and powered woodworking equipment.

- Works from plans and sketches.

- Keeps job and other records.

- Can work from plans and sketches.

- May supervise assigned personnel.

- Performs laboring work requiring physical strength.

- Moves, lifts, and carries items of various weights and sizes.

Some of the physical activities performed by Carpenters and environmental conditions experiences are:

- Lifting and carrying building materials weighing up to approximately 80 pounds.

- Climbing and descending ladders and scaffolds.

- Working in hot areas in boiler rooms; working in confined spaces.

- Standing upright for extended periods of time.

- Working in noisy and dusty areas.

- Using electric- powered shop equipment and power drives electrical hand tools and machinery.

- Ability to wear OSHA approved dust masks, safety goggle, work boots and work gloves.

Responsibilities of working within the ceremonial unit include but may not be limited to:

- Building stages, hanging signage, putting up tents, setting up pipe & drape, and other event-related duties upon request.

- Building frames for signage, install shelving, and building woodwork pieces upon request.

- Requires a flexible schedule to support the needs of the Mayor and City agencies.

- Required to operate motor vehicles in connection with the performance of duties.


Minimum Qualifications

1. Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as a Carpenter acquired within the last 10 years; or
2. Three years of experience as described in “1" above, plus sufficient training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade or vocational high school to make up a total of five years of acceptable experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of approved trade or vocational school training.


Preferred Skills

Possession of a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) valid in the State of New York is required.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
