Job Description
The Department of Social Services (DSS) is comprised of the administrative units of the New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA) and the Department of Homeless Services (DHS). HRA is dedicated to fighting poverty and income inequality by providing New Yorkers in need with essential benefits such as Food Assistance and Emergency Rental Assistance. DHS is committed to preventing and addressing homelessness in New York City by employing a variety of innovative strategies to help families and individuals successfully exit shelter and return to self-sufficiency as quickly as possible.
HRA/General Support Services (GSS) provides safe, healthy, and appropriate facilities for HRA’s various social service programs. Its many functions include facilities planning and coordination, design and construction, renovation, repair and maintenance, custodial and other building services, health/safety program coordination, lease and property management, land use and environmental review activities, contract administration for facilities services, and warehouse operations. GSS plays a major role in HRA emergency preparedness.
General Support Services (GSS) / Facilities Operations (FO) is recruiting for one (1) Custodian II to function as Building Custodian, who will:
- Supervise custodial staff in various titles, including assistant building custodians, junior building custodians and custodial assistants who perform building cleaning and maintenance tasks.
- Inspect building to determine whether cleaning and maintenance services have been adequately provided and notes deficiencies to be corrected and any repairs which must be made.
- Supervise and may participate in the making of minor repairs; report conditions requiring the services of a mechanic.
- Requisition fuel; requisition, stores, and issue janitorial supplies.
- Arrange for the opening and closing of building ensuring that city property is secure.
- Report on work performed by outside contractors.
- Arrange for and supervises the moving of furniture.
- Enforce building safety requirements.
- Prepare, maintain, and submit reports on building custodial activities, incidents, accidents and unusual activities.
- Train and arrange training for staff.
Two years of full-time satisfactory experience in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings.
To be assigned to Assignment Level II, candidates must have three years of satisfactory experience as described in the "Qualification Requirements" above.
To be assigned to Assignment Level III and IV candidates must have four years of satisfactory experience as described in the "Qualification Requirements" above.
