NYC Parks is the steward of more than 30,000 acres of land – 14 percent of New York City – including more than 5,000 individual properties ranging from Coney Island Beach and Central Park to community gardens and Greenstreets. We operate more than 800 athletic fields and nearly 1,000 playgrounds, 1,800 basketball courts, 550 tennis courts, 65 public pools, 51 recreational facilities, 15 nature centers, 14 golf courses and 14 miles of beaches. We care for 1,200 monuments and 23 historic house museums. We look after 660,000 street trees, and five million more in parks. We are New York City’s principal providers of recreational and athletic facilities and programs. We are home to free concerts, world-class sports events, and cultural festivals.

Major Responsibilities

- Under the direction of the Agency Commissioner and First Deputy Commissioner with direct report to the first Deputy Commissioner serve as chief executive officer for all borough activities.
- Oversee and develop robust community engagement strategies that are reflective and sensitive to neighborhood diversity, and ambitious in expanding the network of park patrons and public program participants and volunteers across the City.
- Uphold the voice, messaging and key services and initiatives of the agency, as shaped by the Commissioner, to external stakeholders, and identify opportunities to connect programs and services to the lived experience of New Yorkers. Manage community relations and public information related to borough events and operations.
- As the Commissioner’s representative, meet with the Borough President, City Council members, community boards, neighborhood associations, environmental groups, sports and cultural organizations and other interest groups to address general policy issues and community matters.
- Develop and formulate expense and capital budget priorities and personnel staffing requests for the borough. Work closely with senior management on the administration of budget and park construction and reconstruction projects.
- Oversee capital project development and support of public programs for the borough and work collaboratively with citywide divisions on agency priorities and initiatives.
- Monitor all aspects of the borough services such as maintenance and operations, administration, budget, technical services, fleet, forestry and horticulture. Work with officials at other city, state and federal agencies to deliver services to constituent.
- Work closely with the Mayor’s Office and other city agencies regarding all concerns associated with park issues including security and maintenance.

BOROUGH COMMISSIONER (PARKS AN - 95839

Qualifications are determined by Agency Head.

1. Five plus years of management experience at a high-level. 2. Public/non-profit management experience a plus. 3. Excellent communication skills including public speaking, writing and handling press and public information requests. 4. Strong ability to create and manage budgets and projects, and experience working with public officials and a wide variety of partnership organizations. 5. Master’s degree in Public Administration, Business Management, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Journalism or Law. 6. A valid New York State driver license.
