Job Description
The Department of Sanitation (DSNY) keeps New York City clean, safe, and healthy by collecting, recycling, and disposing of waste, cleaning streets, attacking the scourge of illegal dumping, and clearing snow and ice. The Department operates 59 district garages and manages a fleet of more than 2,000 rear-loading collection trucks, 450 mechanical brooms, 705 salt spreaders, and several dozen bike lane operations machines. Under the Adams Administration, the Department is aggressively cleaning more parts of the City than ever before, including over 1,000 long-ignored areas spread across every neighborhood. With the highest wintertime uniformed headcount in 20 years, DSNY is more equipped than ever to remove snow and ice from the approximately 19,000 lane-miles of City streets.
Under general direction, with latitude for the exercise of independent judgment, the Supervisor of Mechanics Class 2 reports directly to the Borough Command, providing regular updates on operational status, challenges, and accomplishments within the fleet management area. They are granted the autonomy to conduct independent judgment on a higher and more frequent basis. The Supervisor of Mechanics manages and supervises the administration of fleet service procedures, and protocols to implement effective training programs to keep skilled trade personnel apprised of new developments, plans, and implement programs related to the operation of the agency’s motor vehicle equipment
Duties include, but are not limited to:
1. Coordinating policy initiatives to comply with Citywide Fleet and other mandates relating to motor vehicles.
2. Providing technical advice on equipment and related matters
3. Analyzing the effectiveness of repair facilities and recommending cost-effective savings.
4. Directing all maintenance, repair, and other functions of various operational segments of motor equipment maintenance.
5. Verifying the quality of work in the repair and maintenance of vehicles by subordinates
6. Ensuring that they are responsible for the correct and complete performance of all assigned duties and tasks of subordinates within the area of responsibility.
7. In addition to overall supervision, provide supervisors within the area of responsibility with guidelines, priorities, and information required to meet the Bureau’s objectives.
8. Designing and implementing proper work schedules that are adhered to following a proactive decision-making process

Qualification Requirements
1. Seven years of full-time satisfactory experience as an Auto Machinist, Auto
Mechanic, Auto Mechanic (Diesel), Electrician (Automobile) or Machinist, two
years of which must have been at a supervisory level; or
2. At least five years of experience as described in "1" above, plus sufficient training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade, technical or vocational high school, or relevant education in an accredited college, to make up the equivalent of the remaining required experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of approved trade or vocational high school. One year of acceptable experience will be credited for each 30 semester credits in college. However, all candidates must have the two years of supervisory experience described in "1" above.
License Requirements
Possession of a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment. For appointment to certain positions a Class B Commercial Driver License valid in the State of New York with no restrictions may be required. The Class B Commercial Driver License with no restrictions must be maintained for the duration of employment.
