Job Description

**In order to be considered for this position candidate must be serving permanently in the title of City Planner or be reachable on the civil service list, or be eligible under the 55a program.**

DOT’s mission is to provide for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods in the City of New York and to maintain and enhance the transportation infrastructure crucial to the economic vitality and quality of life of our primary stakeholders, New York City residents. DOT is an equal opportunity employer, committed to recruiting and maintaining a diverse workforce in an open and inclusive environment. The Strategic and Regional Planning Unit is housed within DOT’s Transportation Planning and Management (TPM) division. TPM’s responsibilities include but are not limited to planning, regional coordination, street design, technical analysis, transit development, freight mobility, and ensuring the safety of motor vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists.

The Strategic and Regional Planning Unit seeks an Assistant Regional Planner to develop and implement grant-funded regional planning studies and to assist with other federally funded regional planning activities. Reporting to the Regional Planning Program Coordinator, the Assistant Regional Planner will be responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with transportation planners and other local officials in jurisdictions throughout the New York City (NYC) Metro, but especially in those neighboring NYC directly. To facilitate that external facing work, the incumbent will coordinate closely with work units from across the Department of Transportation (DOT), including but not limited to those units responsible for communications, intergovernmental relations, safety education, areawide transportation studies, and active transportation. The incumbent may also be asked to participate in working groups convened by the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council (NYMTC) and to coordinate with other city agencies.

The Assistant Regional Planner will develop and maintain a database of regional planning contacts and facilitate bilateral and multilateral meetings as needed. The individual in this role will assemble data and visual content to build out, and subsequently present, slide decks to internal and external stakeholders. As a new position within DOT, there will be significant latitude in this role for creativity and innovation, especially in the formulation of new, federally reimbursable planning studies and engagement initiatives. The Assistant Regional Planner will gain a strong understanding of the breadth of DOT’s multimodal transportation planning work, and how that work results in tangible improvements for the communities DOT serves.

Preferred Skills
The preferred candidate will exhibit a prompt and capable communications style both written and orally and superior organizational skills.
