NYC Parks GreenThumb provides technical assistance, educational workshops, operational support and materials to community gardens throughout New York City. Supporting over 550 community gardens and 20,000 volunteer gardeners, GreenThumb is the largest community gardening program in the country.

Major Responsibilities

- Under supervision of the Deputy Director, with latitude for independent initiative and judgment, oversee GreenThumb’s long-range planning efforts and implementation of special projects in community gardens.
- Manage and support a team of 6 employees overseeing a variety of programs and projects, including but not limited to capital improvements, property management, community visioning and garden renovations.
- Oversee a multimillion-dollar capital and expense budget related to capital projects and expanded garden materials.
- Manage special initiatives related to community gardening and urban agriculture, including GreenThumb Community Gardens at NYCHA.
- Manage an expanding portfolio of infrastructure projects and garden renovations with external organizations.
- Oversee grant funded projects, including the $46 million USDA-NRCS grant to increase access to water supply infrastructure.
- Perform research, analyze data, prepare reports and complete tasks as assigned in various areas related to urban agriculture and community gardening.

Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.


Preferred Skills

1. Master’s degree or coursework in urban planning, geography, environmental science, landscape design/architecture, or a related field. 2. Experience in community gardening, community organizing, organizational development or a related field. 3. Strong verbal and written communication skills. 4. Experience working with community groups, non-profits and government agencies. 5. Ability to work evenings and weekends and outdoor environments. 6. Ability to manage multiple assignments with competing deadlines. 7. Second language a plus. 8. Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and related applications. 9. Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud and/or GIS.

Residency Requirement

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required within 90 days of hire for all other candidates.
