NYC Parks GreenThumb provides technical assistance, educational workshops, operational support and materials to community gardens throughout New York City. Supporting over 550 community gardens and 20,000 volunteer gardeners, GreenThumb is the largest community gardening program in the country. GreenThumb Operations is the field operations unit of GreenThumb and the team is responsible for the delivery of fresh compost, topsoil and lumber; preparing new garden sites for planting construction; and making necessary structural repairs such as tree pruning, fence and sidewalk repair to ensure that our garden spaces remain safe and inviting.

Major Responsibilities
- Under general direction of the Deputy Director of GreenThumb, with latitude for independent initiative and judgment, oversee various operations functions of GreenThumb, such as community garden maintenance and restoration, material pick-up and delivery, pest and invasive species management, minor construction/demolition/carpentry, snow and ice removal, site clearing and preparation, minor fencing and sidewalk repairs, minor tree pruning, plantings and various related activities.
- Manage a team of 12–20 operations staff, supervise their training, and ensure proper use of tools and equipment.
- Serve as an advocate and liaison for GreenThumb Operations. Represent GreenThumb to government agencies, community groups and greening partners.
- Coordinate within internal and external partners regarding property management and capital projects such as other divisions at Parks, contractors, and developers.
- Perform site visits to assess conditions, develop scopes of work and work plans, determine material needs and procure supplies and materials.
- Develop a long-term operations plan and track the usage of materials and inventories.
- Direct work scheduling and prioritization using Parks AMPS platform and the GreenThumb Access database.
- Oversee the purchase and distribution of supplies and plants to gardens during annual supply distributions.
- Manage a vehicle fleet and an approximately 1-acre operations and maintenance facility in Long Island City, Queens.
- Manage the expense budget, oversee contracts and purchasing, and prepare reports for Parks and City management.

Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.


Preferred Skills

1. Bachelor’s degree and advanced training or significant experience in horticulture, forestry, natural resources, soil science, open space management, landscape architecture or a related field. 2. Strong communication, supervisory and project management experience. 3. Ability to work outdoors and work occasional evenings or weekends. 4. Proficiency in Microsoft 365 basic understanding of Microsoft Access a plus. 5. Fluency in Spanish a plus. 6. A valid New York State driver license. Commercial Driver License (CDL) a plus.
Residency Requirement

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required within 90 days of hire for all other candidates.
