The Office of Chief Medical Examiner investigates cases of persons who die within New York City from criminal violence, by accident, by suicide, suddenly when in apparent health, when unattended by a physician, in a correctional facility or in any suspicious or unusual manner or where an application is made pursuant to law for a permit to cremate a body of a person.

Under the direction of the Executive Director of Forensic Operations & Administration, the selected candidate will oversee the Forensic Quality Control (FQC) and Forensic Autopsy Services Units (FASU). Typical tasks include but are not limited to the following:

- Administer and coordinate citywide forensic autopsy services at the three forensic pathology centers.
- Work closely with the Directors of Forensic Photography, X-Ray, Evidence and other departments to streamline work performed in the autopsy room to ensure timely and accurate processing of cases.
- Meet with Deputy Medical Examiners, Medical Examiners and Mortuary Supervisors on a regular basis and make site visits to each borough office.
- Develop FASU and FQC unit standard operating policies and procedures (SOP) and maintaining SOPs in document control system.
- Directly supervise the Medical Examiner Assistants and Lead Forensic Quality Specialist and indirectly supervise the Forensic Quality Specialists.
- Participate in the training and assignment of FASU and FQS staff.
- Formulate and implement proficiency examinations for the FASU and recommend changes to SOPs in the form of directives.
- Ensure that reports regarding the operations of the units are prepared and distributed.
- Identify, interview and onboard new staff.
- Coordinate problem resolutions for weekend and holiday staffing and operational issues as they arise.
- Ensure FASU, FQS and case management issues are addressed in a timely manner.
- Supervise all aspects of the FQS Unit.
- Monitors citywide reconciliation processes in each borough.
- Operates a motor vehicle.
- Performs other duties as required.


Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, with specialization in criminalistics, forensic science, chemistry, biology, physics, molecular genetics, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, entomology, anthropology, ecology or a closely related scientific or engineering field.


Preferred Skills

Qualification requirements: 1. A Master’s degree from an accredited college, with specialization in criminalistics, forensic science, chemistry, biology, physics, molecular genetics, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, entomology, anthropology, ecology or a closely related scientific or engineering field and at least one year of satisfactory full-time experience in criminalistics, forensic science or analytical chemistry or a satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience, and at least 18 months of executive, managerial, administrative or supervisory experience. 2. In addition to “1” above, all candidates must have one of the following: a) Six years of experience gained as a Criminalist at Assignment Level I-B, II, III, and/or IV OR b) Six additional years of experience in criminalistics or forensic science, for a total of four years of such experience OR c) A satisfactory combination of education and experience totaling five years of experience, as described above. 1. Successful candidates should possess the following: at least one year of supervisory experience, experience managing a diverse staff, conflict resolution skills, demonstrated skills in Microsoft Word and Excel must be highly organized and possess excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills.
