Job Description
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.
The NYPD is seeking a candidate to serve as Assistant Commissioner, Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Legal Matters, who will report directly to the Deputy Commissioner of Legal Matters. The Assistant Commissioner will provide legal and policy advice to Department executives and help oversee over five hundred members of service across the Legal Bureau, the Professional Standards Division, and the Gun License Division. The Assistant Commissioner will serve as a liaison to a variety of government agencies, prosecutors’ offices, and oversight entities. The Assistant Commissioner, as directed by the Deputy Commissioner, will represent the Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Legal Matters both within and outside the Department.

EXECUTIVE AGENCY COUNSEL - 95005
Admission to the New York State Bar; and four years of recent full-time responsible, relevant, satisfactory legal experience subsequent to admission to any bar, eighteen months of which must have been in the supervision of other attorneys, in an administrative, managerial or executive capacity, or performing highly complex and significant legal work.
Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.
Preferred skills include: At least fifteen years of legal experience subsequent to bar admission, including experience with criminal prosecution, civil litigation, and regulatory compliance programs experience providing legal advice to members of law enforcement experience managing a staff of attorneys and non-attorneys in an executive legal capacity.
NYC residency is not required for this position.
