The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is the largest Fire Department in the United States and universally is recognized as the world's busiest and most highly skilled emergency response agency. The Fire Department, City of New York (FDNY), seeks an Assistant Commissioner (AC) of Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO). Reporting directly to the Fire Commissioner, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading, planning and the execution of all EEO compliance activities on behalf of the FDNY, and will be guided by the principle that an equitable workplace is mission critical to the success to the FDNY's life-saving mission. This position requires extremely high levels of expertise in employment law, the ability to exercise substantial discretion and judgment, and the confidence to make impactful, time-sensitive decisions in a fast-paced workplace. The AC will know how to effectively communicate and provide high level advice, guidance and counsel to the FDNY executive team, and will draft and revise policies as necessary to achieve the FDNY's workplace goals. The AC will exhibit resiliency in leadership and will inspire a team of dedicated attorneys to ensure that all investigations are conducted in a timely and objective manner. Based on these investigations, the AC will make findings and issue appropriate recommendations to the Fire Commissioner. Once approved, the AC will execute the recommendations. The ability to write clearly and concisely and edit attorney work product is an essential requirement of this position. The AC will assist in the capture and reporting of large-scale data related to equal opportunity to ensure effective fulfillment of bureau functions. The AC will oversee the reasonable accommodation process, including engaging in the interactive process and issuing decisions to employee requests. The AC will also have significant employee facing contact, and may, from time to time appear in court or confer with affinity organizations and labor unions.
