Under executive direction of the Commissioner of the Department of Probation and with wide latitude for independent judgment, action and decision-making, the Assistant Commissioner provides direction and administrative review to a staff. The Assistant Commissioner serves in a senior leadership role and supports the Commissioner in planning, directing, and overseeing agency programs, operations, and initiatives. The role involves strategic management, policy development, and supervision of staff to ensure the effective delivery of services aligned with the agency’s mission and citywide priorities. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
-Assist the Commissioner in setting strategic direction, goals, and performance measures for agency programs and operations
-Oversee day-to-day management of assigned divisions, initiatives, or functional areas
-Develop, implement, and evaluate policies, procedures, and operational plans
-Provide executive-level leadership and supervision to managerial and professional staff
-Manage budgets, contracts, grants, and other fiscal or administrative resources, as assigned
-Represent the agency in meetings with elected officials, community stakeholders, interagency partners, and the public
-Analyze data, trends, and performance metrics to inform decision-making and continuous improvement
-Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and city policies
-Lead special projects and cross-agency initiatives as directed by the Commissioner
-Support equity, inclusion, and ethical standards across all agency operations

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR (DEPARTMENT - 51877
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and four years of full-time paid experience in counseling or casework in a recognized agency adhering to acceptable standards in probation, parole, social services, psychiatric or medical social work or related field, at least 18 months of which must have been in a responsible supervisory, administrative or consultative capacity performing activities related to the duties of the position; or
A combination of education and/or experience equivalent to “1” above. However, all candidates must have at least 18 months of experience in an administrative, managerial, executive, consultative, executive capacity or supervising personnel performing activities related to the duties of the position.
-Experience working in a municipal or other governmental setting -Strong understanding of public-sector administration, budgeting, and regulatory environments -Proven ability to lead teams, manage change, and work collaboratively across departments -Ability to analyze and recommend policies and procedures with strategic foresight. -Ability to propose innovative approaches to complex problems.
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
