Job Description

The NYC Department of Probation (DOP) is a world leader in working creatively and effectively engaging with people under court-mandated community supervision. Following the best current data on “what works,” staff at DOP engage in meaningful relationships with those on probation in effort to enhance community safety and decrease recidivism.

Under the general direction of the Associate Commissioner, with wide latitude for independent initiative and judgment, will have management responsibility for overall planning, directing and administering activities for the Department of Probation. The Assistant Commissioner will have overall management responsibility for a borough’s Adult Services. Specific duties will include, but not be limited to:

- Plans, directs, and administers the activities of a borough’s Adult Services.
- Plans for the effective management and delivery of probation services for Supreme and Criminal Court in both the preparation of Investigation and Supervision reports and the provision of effective supervision services.
- Provides direction and consultation to management personnel responsible for the delivery of Adult Services.
- Participates in the development, formulation, implementation, and evaluation of new and existing policies and procedures for Adult Services within the areas of assignment.
- Serves as a liaison and acting representative in matters involving the Criminal and Supreme Courts, the District Attorney and other law enforcement agencies.


Minimum Qualifications

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and four years of full-time paid experience in counseling or casework in a recognized agency adhering to acceptable standards in probation, parole, social services, psychiatric or medical social work or related field, at least 18 months of which must have been in a responsible supervisory, administrative or consultative capacity performing activities related to the duties of the position; or

A combination of education and/or experience equivalent to “1” above. However, all candidates must have at least 18 months of experience in an administrative, managerial, executive, consultative, executive capacity or supervising personnel performing activities related to the duties of the position.


Preferred Skills

- Have an understanding of and commitment to the mission and vision of the Department of Probation and the New York City Model of Probation. - Strong management experience. - Comprehensive knowledge of New York City and State Court Systems, probation/social service case work principles and regulations, trends and developments in the probation field and best practices in the area of motivating persons under supervision to lead law abiding lives. - Ability to inspire and motivate adult probation staff to embrace and implement new approaches or goals as determined collaboratively with the cabinet, executive, and senior staff. - Ability to work independently and, at the same time, as a member of a team. - Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and team building skills. - Ability to multi-task and travel to the various borough offices, as needed. - Ability to analyze and recommend policies and procedures with strategic foresight. - Ability to propose innovative approaches to complex problems. - Proven ability to present the agency’s position in meetings with high level officials and other government and private entities. - Excellent oral and written communication skills. - Exceptional analytical, evaluative, and objective critical thinking skills.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
