Job Description

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The New York City Police Department strives to foster a safe and fair city through the strategic deployment of resources, focusing on both crime prevention and addressing quality-of-life concerns while building lasting community relationships.

The candidate will assist the Chief Surgeon in overseeing, assessing, and Implementing all medical activities undertaken by the Department, from pre-hiring through retirement; advise the Police Commissioner, First Deputy Commissioner and the Chief of Personnel on medical policy and preparedness issues, and coordinating its activities with other City responder agencies; oversee the activities of all healthcare personnel including Police Surgeons, Nurse Practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, psychologists, X-Ray technician and other ancillary healthcare professionals; serve as the quality control ombudsman ensuring standards of practice, medical documentation and member satisfaction; represent the Chief Surgeon when necessary at trauma reserve, major Incidents, inter-agency and other meetings, and the Police Pension and Police Relief Fund; provide legal testimony and affidavits; and assist the Chief Surgeon with clinical research projects, presentations and preparing peer-review publications.

Functions of the Office of the Chief Surgeon include:
- Supervising a cadre of police surgeons and honorary police surgeons, and overseeing the activities of medical district in five department health care facilities
- Collaborating with the Legal Bureau, DCPI, Training and various other bureaus on Issues of departmental concern, and providing expert medical testimony for legal cases involving the department
- Coordinating various health and well-being initiatives, campaigns, and clinical studies including the activities of the Mobile Health Van at precincts, transit districts, and PSAs, as well as cardiovascular screenings for membership to department fitness facilities
- Performing medical clearances of uniformed and civilian candidates with the Candidate Assessment Division.

Minimum Qualifications


He/she must possess a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York plus Board Certification Issued by the appropriate American Specialty Board.


Preferred Skills


The candidate must possess strong clinical, administrative and communication skills and extensive knowledge of current trends In medicine and the Department' s medical policies end procedures. This is a full-time position, which requires 40 hours per week, in addition to on-call rotations.

Residency Requirement


New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
