About the Office:
Conceived of more than 50 years ago and operating since at least 1973, the Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD) is the liaison between New York City government and the disability community. In partnership with all City offices and agencies, MOPD consistently ensures that the rights and concerns of the disability community are included in all City initiatives and that City programs and policies address the needs of people with disabilities. Through its work and advocacy in the areas of transportation, employment, healthcare, housing, education, access to City services, and financial empowerment and more, MOPD has steadily improved services and programs and the overall quality of life for the nearly one million New Yorkers who self-identify as people who are living with a disability as well as the millions of people with disabilities who visit our city every year. Working to make New York the most accessible city in the world, the office regularly engages in advocacy and policymaking at the local, state, national, and international levels to make certain that accessibility and full inclusion are key priorities for all public and private stakeholders alike.
About the Role:
- Provide sign-language interpreter services;
- Serve as a designated interpreter for Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD);
- Work alongside the Commissioner in a broad range of contextual environments, including but not limited to one-on-one meetings, small and large meetings, staff meetings, office events, conferences, the out-of-office events, video conferences, trainings, presentations;
- Accurately interpret spoken English into American Sign Language and from American Sign Language (ASL) to spoken English in meetings and various assignments as directed;
- Attend the workplace regularly, reports to work punctually and follows a work schedule to keep up with the demands of the worksite. Working hours may include evenings, holidays or weekends depending on deadline requirements and special events;
- Complete duties and responsibilities in compliance with citywide standards, policies and guidelines;
- Complete all citywide required training;
- Promote positive morale and teamwork within the Mayor’s Office and provides exceptional customer service;
- Administrative tasks and projects as directed during interpretation breaks or when otherwise not being utilized as an interpreter, which may include: working with the Mayor’s Office EEO Officer; receiving requests for accommodations and documents, determining services needed, coordinating services for deaf, deafblind, or hard of hearing and blind or low vision individuals; assisting in creating interpreter schedules, requesting interpreters; working with interpreter vendor(s); coordinating interpreters to cover any Mayor’s Office requiring services; and maintaining awareness of best practices, emerging trends and new legislation relating to Sign Language/Interpreting functional area;
- Perform other duties as assigned;
- The duration of this position is contingent on agency needs;
- Successful applicants will be bound by confidentiality and may be required to enter into a non-disclosure agreement provided by the City of New York;
- Manage special projects and initiatives as assigned.
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and four years of satisfactory full-time experience related to projects and policies required by the particular position;
or
2. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" above.
The preferred candidate should possess the following: - Able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily - Minimum of five (5) years of ASL interpreting experience - Demonstrated proficiency and expertise of both ASL and English - Demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills - Demonstrated skill and proficiency in tactile communication - Excellent judgment and experience handling sensitive material/matters - Demonstrated ability to be a team player in a dynamic and fast-paced environment - Dedication to client services and willingness to be responsive - Ability to work in a fast paced and a dynamic office environment - Must be able to travel occasionally to various locations to fulfill position responsibilities
