The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for staff, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledge experts.

Under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Environmental Health, the Asbestos Director will be
responsible for the following:
- Identifying, evaluating, prioritizing, and supervising the response to any friable asbestos found in
Department facilities.
- Supervising the Asbestos Supervisor.
- Performing inspections at DOC facilities to determine if asbestos is present prior to maintenance
projects or capital projects.
- Scheduling, monitoring and overseeing the asbestos abatement projects performed by outside
contractors during construction to ensure compliance with existing city, state, and federal regulations.
- Conducting the annual Asbestos Awareness Training for the Department.
- Communicating with the Assistant Commissioner and designee.
- Serving as the agency’s liaison to the New York City Department of Environmental Protection for all
asbestos related issues.
- Developing specifications for new asbestos abatement and air monitoring contracts.
- Overseeing the asbestos and air monitoring contracts.

Minimum Qualifications

A valid certificate as a Certified Asbestos Handler Supervisor issued by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection pursuant to Local Law 76/85 as amended; plus
1. A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and four years of satisfactory, full-time experience performing asbestos abatement and removal, at least one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or
2. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" above.
In addition, candidates must meet certain medical requirements.
License Requirement
Possession of a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York.


Preferred Skills

- Excellent written and oral communication skills required Knowledge of Excel and Microsoft Word is recommended.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
