Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The mission of the New York Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations, and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.

The NYPD Legal Bureau serves as in-house counsel to the Department and assist members of the service in interpreting local, state, and federal laws. The Bureau represents the Department in a variety of civil matters, produces records and video footage to external oversight bodies and for litigation, reviews and negotiates complex contracts and memoranda of understanding, and assesses Department policies, practices, procedures, and forms for legal sufficiency and conformance with the law.

The NYPD Legal Bureau currently has several Level I attorney positions available. While day-to-day duties will vary based on assignment, the attorney will represent the Department on a variety of legal matters.

Typical tasks and responsibilities will include:

- Representing the Department in Article 78 proceedings regarding Freedom of Information Law requests, as well as
before administrative bodies on a variety of employment law matters.
- Appearing at administrative hearings before the City of New York's Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings, as well as in New York State Supreme Court.
- Assisting in the development of policy, procedures and guidelines for data retention and dissemination.
- Searching, retrieving, reviewing, notating, redacting and disseminating documents and videos in response to various legal requests from the public and from government agencies.
- Assisting the New York City Law Department in the defense of police action and employment discrimination claims, including processing requests for preservation of evidence in e-discovery matters.
- Participating in enforcement operations, including the execution of closing orders under the nuisance abatement law.

The Legal Bureau is actively seeking attorneys for placement in its Civil Section, Body Worn Camera Unit, Police Action Litigation Section, e-Discovery Unit, and Civil Enforcement Unit.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Admission to the New York State Bar; and either "2" or "3" below.
2. One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar; or
3. Six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne (30086).
Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.
In addition to meeting the minimum Qualification Requirements:
To be assigned to Assignment Level (AL) II, candidates must have one year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment. To be assigned to AL III candidates must have two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment.


Preferred Skills

Preferred skills include: -Strong communication skills both oral and written, as well as excellent analytical and interpersonal skills. - Ability to multitask and handle a complex portfolio of legal issues. - Organized, detail-oriented, able to meet deadlines for time-sensitive projects. - Ability to possess and maintain a NYS Driver License.
