The NYPD strives to foster a safe city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations, and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.

The Deputy Commissioner, Legal Matters (DCLM) provides legal guidance to the Police Department and is responsible for advising all members of the Department on all legal matters affecting the Department, including major civil litigation and important judicial developments. The Bureau monitors and facilitates the relationship between the Department and the rest of the criminal justice system and assists members of the service in interpreting and enforcing state, federal, and local laws; ensures that the policies and practices of the department are lawful and are fairly applied; and develops legislation in accordance with the needs of the Department and public safety concerns

DCLM is actively seeking Agency Attorney Interns for placement in its Body-Worn Camera and Giglio Units. among others. The Agency Attorney Interns will work directly under the supervision of a Managing Attorney in the Legal Bureau. While day-to-day duties will vary based on assignment, the agency attorney interns will represent the Department on a variety of legal matters.

Typical tasks and responsibilities will include.

- Representing the Department in Article 78 proceedings regarding Freedom of Information Law requests.
- Making court and hearing appearances before administrative bodies on a variety of employment law matters - Assisting in the development of policy, procedures and guidelines for data retention and dissemination.
- Searching, retrieving, reviewing, notating, redacting and disseminating documents and videos in response to various legal requests from the public and from government agencies.
- Using affirmative litigation to interrupt criminal activity, address chronic precinct conditions, and improve the quality of life of city residents.
- Assisting the Law Department in the defense of police action litigation claims and processing requests for preservation of evidence in e-discovery matters.


Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited United States law school as defined in the Rules of the New York Court of Appeals (Sections 520.3 or 520.5) or admission to the New York State Bar.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
