THE SELECTED CANDIDATE WILL BE OFFERED A SALARY BETWEEN $47,418 - $54,531.

The Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) protects and promotes the safety and well-being of New York City’s children and families by providing child welfare, juvenile justice, and early care services. In child welfare, ACS contracts with private nonprofit organizations to support and stabilize families at risk of a crisis through preventive services and provides foster care services for children not able to safely remain at home. Each year, the agency’s Division of Child Protection responds to more than 50,000 reports of suspected child abuse or neglect. In juvenile justice, ACS manages and funds services including detention and placement, intensive community-based alternatives for youth, and support services for families. ACS is also a key part of NYCs early childhood and education continuum, providing childcare assistance to thousands of child welfare involved and low-income children so they can access safe, affordable, quality care.

Family Court Legal Services (FCLS) is responsible for representing the Administration for Children’s Services in child neglect and abuse cases, permanency hearings and other child welfare proceedings in the New York City Family Courts. Under general supervision, with some latitude for independent initiative and judgment, a Principal Administrative Associate 1 performs administrative functions in support of office functioning.

Duties will include:

- Enter data into LTS to initiate cases in the system through information gathered from Division of Child Protection staff.

- Copy, collate, and transmit legal documents.

- Process incoming mail, by receiving/opening/sorting/stamping/routing/distributing received materials, in order to ensure prompt receipt by addressees.

- Take incoming calls and transfers as necessary, in order to facilitate telephone communications with the attorney staff or liaisons.

- Draft confidential documents using standard formats in order to produce finished copies for distribution. Drafts letters or other correspondence, following instructions given, in order to assist supervisor in communicating information.

- Prepare charts and tables of staff available for work assignments, by reviewing periodic rotation/assignment reports/checking for equitable distribution, in order to facilitate assignment of cases for processing/another workload.

- Verify information received concerning client cases though contact with agencies or other divisions or by checking other information sources, in order to confirm accuracy of information.

- Generate, print, and mail Permanency Planning Hearing Reports and notice from LTS.

- Review and pack closed files for storage.

- Fill motions with the court.


Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and three years of satisfactory full-time progressively responsible clerical/administrative experience, one year of which must have been in an administrative capacity or supervising staff performing clerical/administrative work of more than moderate difficulty; or
2. An associate degree or 60 semester credits from an accredited college and four years of satisfactory full-time progressively responsible clerical/administrative experience including one year of the administrative supervisory experience described in "1" above; or
3. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's department of education or a recognized accrediting organization and five years of satisfactory full-time progressively responsible clerical/administrative experience including one year of the administrative supervisory experience as described in "1" above;
4. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1", "2", or "3" above. However, all candidates must possess the one year of administrative or supervisory experience as described in "1" above. Education above the high school level may be substituted for the general clerical/administrative experience (but not for the one year of administrative or supervisory experience described in "1" above) at a rate of 30 semester credits from an accredited college for 6 months of experience up to a maximum of 3½ years.


Preferred Skills

The ideal candidate will have at least two years of work experience, preferably in a law office or community centered organization. Candidate should also have knowledge of computer systems, as appropriate, e.g. Microsoft Word.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
