The New York City Employees Retirement System (NYCERS) Finance Division is seeking an Assistant Supervisor in the Accounting and Financial Reporting unit. The Accounting and Financial Reporting unit records and maintains all monetary transactions in the accounting database, deposits all incoming payments, and processes NYCERS’ operating expense invoices and other authorized payments.

Reporting to the Unit Supervisor, the Assistant Supervisor is expected to perform the following duties independently, with minimum to no supervision.
- Assist with managing the day-to-day operations of the Accounting & Financial reporting staff
- Assist with Bank Reconciliations and ensure they are completed on a timely basis and all related discrepancies are independently investigated and resolved
- Review and post journal entries and transactions to the accounting system
- Anticipate the unit’s needs to effectively evaluate and allocate resources. This requires an understanding of the units work and the ability to independently identify priorities and deadlines, such as handling overtime request for team members to ensure all tasks are completed timely
- Approve leave, evaluate performance, maintain supervisory notes, attend meetings as needed, keep the supervisor abreast of changes, work functions, needs, and take action to correct inappropriate behavior
- Oversee training of new or existing unit staff and provide guidance as needed
- Identify work processes that can be streamlined or automated and implementing initiatives to improve efficiency, fostering an environment conducive to continuous improvement, and handling conflict fairly and sensitively
- Foster a team atmosphere where everyone feels valued, safe, and treated with dignity, regardless of their role, background, or belief


Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college including or supplemented by 24 credits in accounting, including one course each in advanced accounting, auditing, and cost accounting and four years of satisfactory full-time professional accounting or auditing experience, at least 18 months of which must have been in an administrative, managerial, or executive capacity or supervising a staff performing accounting or auditing work; or

2. A valid New York State Certified Public Accountant license and at least 18 months of satisfactory full-time professional accounting or auditing experience in an administrative, managerial or executive capacity or supervising a staff performing accounting or auditing work.


Preferred Skills

- Must Possess Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field - Leadership experience overseeing accounting and other fiscal operations - Strong ability to prioritize/manage projects, and meet deadlines - Excellent communication skills - Attention to detail and outstanding analytical skills - Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve - Strong computer skills and knowledge of accounting software systems

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
