The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 9,000 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.
The Department of Correction Training Academy is seeking a New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (NYS DCJS) certified General Topics Instructor to serve as a part-time Academy Instructor. The selected candidate will be educating current drivers in the field on how to safely transport persons in custody to and from detention facilities, court locations, and other locations as needed. The selected candidate will also be responsible for ensuring classes are delivered within the specifications of DOC polices and procedures, NYS DCJS guidelines, US DOT, and the NYS DMV regulations. The instructor will perform appropriate in class assessments to determine whether training programs meet and achieve goals and objectives: assist with the creation and revision of lesson plans and other relevant training materials; make recommendations to the Director of Training Operations to obtain optimum efficiency in the utilization of staff, equipment and technology and other operating resources; and support the work of the Division and the Director as needed.

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
- Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook etc.) proficiency - Experience in a high-paced environment, with the ability to manage information and distribute appropriately - Ability to establish positive working relationships with multiple units and different levels of staff - Excellent writing, communication, inter-personal, analytical, research, problem-solving, and organizational skills - The candidate must be well-organized, proactive, resourceful, flexible, and able to communicate with staff (at all levels) in a fast- paced environment, meet deadlines, and perform with a high level of professionalism.
