The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
Facilities Management and Construction is responsible for the management of DEP facilities support services including long and short term facilities management and planning, space management, facility capital project management, facility repairs and alterations utilizing in-house staff and/or contract services, environmental health and safety (EHS) Emergency Action Plan (EAP) facility training, ATF site survey inspections, calculations, diagram drawings, specification reviews/interpretations and report writing.
The Environmental Health and Safety-Asbestos, Lead and Mold Remediation Unit’s main mission is to ensure the safety and health of employees and to integrate environmental health and safety into every aspect of the division operations. A pivotal role of the unit is to seek sustainable ways of managing environmental protection, employee health and safety issues for a safe workplace while eliminating and preventing EHS violations. The unit develops and implements EH&S programs to ensure compliance with an extended mandate for managing and implementing hazardous materials programs and contracts. The unit also manages asbestos, lead and mold removal contractors in all phases of abatement requirements in all DEP facilities. This includes managing asbestos, mold and lead complaints, sampling analysis, abatements, air monitoring, building assessments, surveys, building permits, planning, advising bureau EH&S and responding to asbestos emergencies.

The selected candidate will be responsible for reviewing, monitoring and evaluating technical information in files; evaluating and researching specific problematic information related to environmental health and safety concerns, metric reporting, record keeping and filing records. Other responsibilities may include data entry, correspondence with vendors, calculating cost estimates and related tasks.

Candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in an accredited college, university or law school.

Student must currently be enrolled at a college/university at a graduate level majoring in environmental science/engineering, environmental health or any related field including but not limited to epidemiology, toxicology, environmental law, sustainability. Student must have at least a 2.5GPA (on a 4.0 scale) Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and other related environmental health and safety regulations Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite Research, analytical, presentation development skills Selection Criteria: Strong writing skills effective interpersonal skills.
