Job Description
The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Bureau of Engineering, Design & Construction (BEDC) is responsible for the design and construction of major related capital projects. BEDC currently has a portfolio of capital projects valued at $23.8B, and another $10.5B projected over the next 10-year commitment plan. The projects BEDC implements allows DEP as a whole to continue to operate and maintain an exemplary water supply system.
BEDC seeks to hire a Civil Intern for the In-house Design (IHD) directorate located in Queens, NY. Under supervision, the selected candidate will perform elementary design work; assist with planning, coordinating and implementing the design and construction of capital projects; assist with the evaluation of technical issues, design alternatives, and/or proposals; and prepare technical reports and scopes of work for engineering projects.

As of June of the Program year the prospective interne must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.
- Student must currently be enrolled at a college/university at the undergraduate level majoring in Civil/Structural Engineering - Student must have at least a 2.5GPA (on a 4.0 scale) - Student must have at least a junior class standing - Student must have already taken classes in the following subjects: classes in in structural analysis, soil mechanics, fluid mechanics and technical writing. - Familiarity and/or experience with computers/software such as AutoCAD and/or Civil3D, and Microsoft Office suite is preferred. Selection Criteria: - Strong writing skills effective interpersonal skills. - Leadership skills self-motivation and ability to work well with minimal supervision.
New York City residency is NOT required for this position.
