The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Office of Energy and Resource Recovery Programs (Energy Office) is charged with plotting the course for DEP to meet its energy and carbon neutrality goals, maximizing resource recovery, as well as advancing a circular economy for the City’s organic waste. The Energy Office also provides energy and performance tracking, program assessment, scientific research, long term and strategic planning and internal auditing services to DEP's operating bureaus.
Tasks may include but are not limited to:
Forecasting energy use, expenditure, and GHG; regression and spatial analyses relating to the water-energy nexus; assess various innovative energy and GHG reduction initiatives for implementation feasibility; policy analysis. The selected candidate will play a key role in informing the energy and GHG reduction plans at the nation’s largest water and wastewater utility. The selected candidate should have an interest in energy, infrastructure, municipal operations, climate change, and environmental sustainability.
Candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in an accredited college, university or law school.
- Student currently enrolled at a college/university at the graduate level and have at least a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale). - Strong quantitative ability experience with statistics, economic modeling, or financial analysis academic courses tracking and analysis, environmental/public health issues, water and wastewater utility operations, or public policy. Selection Criteria: - Strong writing skills effective interpersonal skills - Familiarity and/or experience with computers/software - Leadership skills research capabilities self-motivation and ability to work well with minimal supervision.
There is no New York City residency requirement for this position.
