The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Commissioner's Office manages strategic projects that impact and intersect with all areas of Agency strategy, policy and operations. This office is seeking an intern to serve as a Business Analyst reporting directly to the Commissioner’s Senior Advisor. The intern will work with a small team in the Commissioner's Office, and coordinate work liaising with multiple DEP business units such Agency Chief Contracting Office, Capital Budget Management Office, Engineering Audit Office, and the DEP operating Bureaus.
Responsibilities will include:
- Analyzing quantitative data across the agency, including operational key performance indicators and budget documents.
- Gathering and documenting business requirements, analyze and formulate recommendations for business process improvements, execute business process redesign.
- Translating business requirements into user requirements for enterprise systems, database, or reporting solutions.
- Managing large data sets, execute data analytics, and formulate key findings and recommendations to drive strategic decision-making.
- Synthesizing information from staff across the organization into compelling, data-driven narratives.
- Preparing agendas and minutes for meetings and track follow up actions across the organization.
- Creating communications and training materials.
- Managing special projects.
Candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in an accredited college, university or law school.
- Internship experience working in an analytical role, engaged in business analysis/research. - Understanding of the engineering and construction industry. - MS Visio software experience. - Advanced Excel skills, including macros. - Database skills such as Access. - Lean Six Sigma or other business process analytics. Selection Criteria: - Demonstrate excellent quantitative assessment of technical and complex material, critical thinking, and an aptitude for providing analysis under tight deadlines. - Have a strong grasp of procurement and financial fundamentals. - Excel in a team-oriented environment develop strong, collaborative relationships with superiors, peers and enjoy working across disciplines and boundaries. - Manage his or her own time to successfully complete a project.
